Does a Lack of Mentorship Affect Our Careers?

Mentorship plays an important role in our everyday lives and is also career-wise. Mentors offer invaluable vast knowledge and guidance. Excellent mentors also help you clarify and set SMART (Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-based) goals. This explains why there are many mentorship platforms today that aim at helping people make informed decisions. Platforms like MentHub have proven to be effective in offering an array of advice across multiple fields, such as career, best universities, college choices, etc.

To help you have a perfect idea, let’s use a perfect example. Oprah Winfrey is the richest woman in the world and one of the most celebrated human beings. In her early 20s, she was working on a TV station as a news anchor. On April 1, 1977, she was fired from this TV station, something that made her frustrated. Oprah didn’t have a mentor to give her advice on what to do next. A few years later, she ventured into her career by starting an independent talk show in America, where she became the primary host.

After a while, she met Maya Angelou, a woman who would later become her mentor, encouraging her to become the best version of herself. Since this friendship, Oprah became the TV person she is today, transforming millions of lives across the globe. Oprah discusses Maya Angelou as a mentor who “Angelou imparted words of wisdom that had a profound effect on their career.” What if Oprah had no mentor? There are two possibilities here. Oprah would have become successful, but probably not at the same rate that she moved with, utilizing Maya’s advice. Second, maybe today we would not know Oprah as we know her today as the CEO of Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). In one of her 2002 interviews, Oprah admitted that “I don’t think anybody makes it in the world without some form of mentorship. Nobody makes it alone.”

Other prominent people like Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, and Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, have also admitted that mentorship has played an important role in helping them accomplish the success they have today. From these examples, we can see that mentorship is an integral part of success and it matters. However, there are chances that some successful people can be without mentors, but it’s 100% sure that unsuccessful people don’t have mentors. To help elevate you from the chances that can hinder your success, we have developed MentHub, a platform meant to help you have clarity on your next career.

MentHub has experienced mentors from various fields of life, where most have gone through the same issues that common people experience.
