How often should you talk to your mentor?

Now when you have found a mentor, and have ramped on the right path to success, what’s next? Finding a mentor is just the beginning of the ride, but what’s more effective is talking with more than one mentor. It broadens your perspective, as you can take advice from experts in different niches.

So, how do you decide how often you should communicate with your mentor? Is there a set of rules you must follow or go out rogue and call now and then? Let me explain it to you with the example of Anny and Abby. Anny is working with a multinational IT company and is hitting smaller goals every day for steady growth in the company. Meanwhile, Abby has decided to leave the same company and do a startup. Both Anny and Abby require a mentor, but the frequency with which they should contact their mentor differs.

As Anny is stable with her job, she does not require constant guidance, but she should call her mentor once in two weeks to stay updated on new opportunities and discuss her ongoing progress. Meanwhile, Abby is going through a life-changing phase, which requires more guidance and support. So she should call her mentor at least three times a week or more if necessary.

You should contact your mentor at least once in two weeks, but if you are going through a life-changing phase, you must call your mentor at least thrice a week.

In the above example, Abby is starting her own business, for which she will require guidance from experts in different areas. She can have a mentor in administration, finance, marketing, law, or other fields. The versatile range of mentors will work as a solid foundation to build her future empire.

Communication is the key to keeping any relationship in rhythm, so don’t wait to hit the brick wall and keep connected with your mentor for a smooth ride ahead.
